ABSTRACT:
Dealing with nano risks - Nanotechnology dialogue activities as a part of a new strategy of risk communication

Although nanotechnology is in its infancy, their is an overall agreement about the need of dialogue between scientists, the industry and the public about risks and benefit of nanotechnology. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Germany supports this strategy by own dialogue activities. These activities base on participation and favour the dialogue with stakeholders and the general public. In 2006, the BfR proactivly organized two dialogue projects – an Expert Delphi Survey and a Consumer Conference - in order to detect risks of nanotechnology in consumer-relevant areas like foods, cosmetics and textiles. Also expert talks and stakeholder meetings are arranged by the BfR to handle acute risks for consumers caused by nanotechnology products (“Magic Nano”). The new risk communication strategy of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and objectives, methods and outcomes of the nanotechnology dialogue activities will be described.

ABOUT RENE ZIMMER:
I have an interdiscplinary background, with qualifications in both biology and sociology. While working at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe, the Centre for Environmental Risk in Norwich and now at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin the main emphasis of my "communicative" activity has involved: arranging and evaluating public participation processes; examining the social perception of technology; analysing public discourse and media coverage; and organizing further education events for risk communication in the fields of biotechnology, medicine and nanotechnology.
