Descriptive writing can be a challenge for English KS2 students. It is easy to teach descriptive writing with a written game of charades. Gather enough commonly recognized objects so that each student has a different object. Place one object on each student’s desk. Without naming the item, students must write a description about the item. When the writing is completed, collect all of the items and written work. Now the fun begins.
Students will now work in teams. The teacher reads each description aloud to the class. Teams then score points when they correctly identify the object based solely on the written description. To make the game more interesting, have the students do the writing portion at the beginning of the week, and the game at the end of the week. This will ensure that students rely solely on the written descriptions.
